Plainedge Library Board
Updates on the Plans for the Future Library

September 21, 2026
We are excited to announce that our construction project is about to commence. Starting on Monday, September 28th, we will close the building to the public as we transition to our temporary quarters.
During this closure, no fines will accumulate on items you have checked out. You are welcome to hold on to your items until we reopen, or you can return them at our neighboring libraries.
We look forward to welcoming you back at our new location: 1085 Hicksville Road, Seaford, NY 11783. This space will feature a selection of our collection, and we will be available for hold pick-ups, quick printing, photocopying, faxing, and notary services.
Due to limited space, most of our collection will be stored safely off-site during construction and will return when your new library reopens. We will still be purchasing items while under construction, and interlibrary loan will still be available.
We are currently exploring options for limited programming and will provide updates once we finalize our agreements.
Thank you for your patience during this transition!
September 2026 – Update
We will soon share news about our upcoming move to temporary facilities. Please check back for more information.
August 2026 – Update
We have received our permits from New York State for the demolition of this facility and the construction of the new Plainedge Public Library. Bid notices have been posted in the Massapequa Herald and we anticipate the awarding of contracts to take place early September.
July 2026 – Update
There have been delays in the review of our plans from NYSED that have resulted in a new timeline.
Our architect plans to go out to bid in early August and begin demolition in early October. We have successfully leased a space for our temporary library and will submit a permit application to the Town of Oyster Bay next week. Please note that the permit approval may take up to eight weeks. Once we receive approval, some modifications will need to be made before we can begin our move, which we anticipate will happen in late September. In the meantime, your current library remains open and available for you.
May 2026 – Update
The project is moving along. We have just been advised by our architect that all Forms, Specifications, and Drawings for review by NYSED Facilities Planning have been submitted. With the new system NYSED has in place, review times have been significantly cut down. Currently, NYSED is showing 1 week for architectural reviews and 1-2 weeks for engineering reviews.
We are also finalizing our temporary space. An update should be available soon.
We thank you for your patience.
March 2026 – Update
A timeline update.
- Spring 2026: Submit plans to Albany for permits
- Spring 2026: We are currently in the process of locating a temporary facility
- Summer 2026: Bidding process and relocation to temporary facility
- Fall 2026: Construction begins
We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
February 2026 – Update
Our architects are preparing the necessary documents for review in Albany. We are awaiting reports from our engineers and consultants and collaborating with our architects on the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing aspects of the new building.
We hope to have more updates shortly.
October 29, 2025 – Update
We have been meeting with our architects to finalize the plans for the new library. They expect to submit the plans to Albany in a few months, with the hope that everything will be approved by spring 2026.
Once the plans are approved, we will start looking for a temporary space. If all goes as planned, a bid for the project will be issued in summer 2026, and construction is set to begin in the fall. The project is anticipated to take approximately 18 months to complete, which means we should move into the new building around spring or early summer of 2028.
Hereโs a timeline of the key milestones:
- Winter 2025-2026: Submit plans to Albany for permits
- Spring 2026: Awaiting permits and locating a temporary facility
- Summer 2026: Bidding process and relocation to temporary facility
- Fall 2026: Construction begins
- Spring/Summer 2028: New library opens
October 22, 2025 – Update
Now that the community has voted to approve the bond for the new building, we have been receiving inquiries about when construction will begin and what the temporary location will be. While we do not have those details yet, we will be meeting with the architects in the coming weeks to discuss our next steps. Updates will be posted on the New Building page of our website, so please check back soon. We promise to keep you informed as progress continues. https://plainedgelibrary.org/new-building-project/

The Plainedge Library Board of Trustees want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our community for passing this much-needed library bond. This is more than an investment in a building, it’s an investment in education and connection opportunities for everyone in our community. The new library will provide modern, inclusive spaces that better serve our growing population and adapt to the evolving needs of current and future generations. We are excited to move forward with a vision that reflects the values of lifelong learning, accessibility and community enrichment. Thank you Plainedge Community for believing in the power of libraries and we look forward to this next chapter.

Following a thorough discussion and collaborative planning process, the Plainedge Library Board of Trustees has chosen to put forth a $16,865,795 million bond resolution to support the construction of a new library for the Plainedge community. Registered voters will cast their ballots on the proposal at the Plainedge Library.
With the growing demand for accessible resources and spaces for learning, collaboration, and community engagement, the Library Board is working to establish a modern, state-of-the-art library that will serve as a hub of endless possibilities for all ages. This new space will aim to support educational programs, foster creativity, promote literacy, and โ above all โ continue to strengthen community bonds. In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the current library, which dates to 1968, no longer meets the needs of its patrons. While the library staff has remained steadfast in its efforts to keep up with the evolution of what libraries have become today, the physical building has continued to struggle with mounting challenges in the form of structural issues, operational concerns, and more. Through a bond, the library would be able to address current structural challenges โ such as spaces not meeting current codes and leaks that impact structural integrity โ as well as create a new building that is sustainable, energy-efficient and primed to host community programs, parent and child-centered activities, expanded programming for adults and services for many generations to come.
โWe are proud of how our public library has become a hub for exploration, learning and creativity for all generations in our Plainedge community,โ said Ann Doxsey, Plainedge Library Board President. โBefore putting forth this bond resolution, please know that we have listened to the community feedback we received since our last attempt at a new building project. Since then, we have reduced the scope of the project, significantly reduced the cost and redesigned the building to meet the aesthetic look of our setting in the community.โ
If approved by the community, the new library would include an expanded childrenโs center, makerspace/STEM lab, large common meeting rooms, quiet study rooms and reading areas, an outdoor courtyard and childrenโs terrace, a young adult space, and more. The new 24,000-square-foot library will be built on the site of the current facility.
โThis bond referendum provides our community with the chance to invest in a brighter future for our Plainedge residents and establish a library that reflects the needs and interests of our neighbors and patrons,โ said Laura Oden-Bell, Plainedge Library Board Vice-President. โWe look forward to sharing our excitement about this project with the Plainedge community.โ
